Prof. Huzur Saran Retires on 30 April 2026
Prof. Huzur Saran approaches retirement from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, he leaves behind an indelible mark on India’s digital landscape. An alumnus of IIT Delhi (B.Tech., 1983) and the University of California, Berkeley (Ph.D., 1989), Prof. Saran’s distinguished career exemplifies how fundamental research can be translated into effective systems with real-world impact.
His early work in wireless systems and high-speed networking, developed during his association with Stanford University and Bell Labs, spanned both fundamental and applied research. As a Visiting Professor at Stanford’s Information Systems Laboratory (2000–2002), he worked on the Media Access Control (MAC) layer of an experimental 4G wireless system, contributing to concepts that later influenced technologies such as WiMAX. While academically rigorous, this research was also driven by a broader social vision: to provide affordable wireless access and mesh-based connectivity for rural India.
Alongside his academic contributions, Prof. Saran maintained a strong connection with industry through his role as a consultant at Solidcore Inc. (2004–2010). He played a significant role in developing an innovative software security framework for critical servers and embedded systems. This work led to the development of dynamic whitelisting technology, which was deployed extensively in ATMs, point-of-sale systems, and enterprise servers. Solidcore was subsequently acquired by McAfee in 2009, reflecting the significant commercial and technological impact of this innovation.
At IIT Delhi, Prof. Saran has held several important leadership positions, including Head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Head of the Computer Services Centre, and Head of the Bharti School of Telecommunication Technology and Management. He also served as the Head of the School of Information Technology. He played a key role in the development of “Baadal,” the academic cloud, and in advancing national 5G testbed initiatives—contributions that have been important to India’s digital infrastructure and research ecosystem.
Beyond his technical achievements, Prof. Saran will be remembered as a principled mentor who placed a strong emphasis on academic integrity and believed deeply in the transformative potential of online education. His retirement marks the conclusion of an important chapter, but his influence—through the infrastructure he helped build, the ideas he advanced, and the people he mentored—will continue to shape India’s technological landscape for decades to come.
