Ph.D/MS(Research) Admissions
Admissions to the PhD/MS(Research) programme are held twice a year, in May and December. Applications can be submitted online at the IIT Delhi Admissions webpage, during March-April and October-November.
Before you read more about our Ph.D. program, here is a quick overview in the form of a blog post by our student Rittik Dey (joined the Ph.D. program in July 2024). He shares insights on campus life, the Ph.D. interview process, and what to expect if you decide to join our program.
General Information
All information regarding admissions – Important Dates, Application Fees for different programmes and payment procedures, Application form and guidelines for filling up the application form, Information Brochure, Advertisement, FAQs – can be found on the IIT Delhi Admissions webpage.
Test and Interview
Following the application submission, candidates will be shortlisted for a test/interview. Shortlisting criteria for test/interview calls will be published on the Department website. The test/interview will test your familiarity with basic concepts in Computer Science and Engineering and your ability to analyze and formulate a solution to a problem.
Topics for the test/interview include (but are not limited to) programming, data structures and algorithms, computer architecture, operating systems, programming languages, computer networks and the theory of computation If you are interested in a particular area of computer science, we expect you to have a strong grasp of that area, besides good knowledge of other CS areas. The department may also conduct a programming test for basic programming skills.
Preparing for PhD/MS(R) Interviews
Several students ask us how to prepare for the interviews. Our interviews aim to test your grasp of Computer Science concepts and ability to reason logically. The questions are conceptual, sometimes creative, and only require reasoning based on first principles. The page – Preparing for PhD Interviews – has some resources to help you prepare.
Notification of Selection
The list of selected candidates will be published on the CSE department website.
Rolling Admissions for PhD
While there are formal announcements for application for admission into our PhD programme (typically in October and March of every year), we accept application forms around the year from interested candidates.
A print version of the application form needs to be submitted along with a demand draft (of Rs. 300/- in favour of Registrar, IIT Delhi payable at Delhi) and relevant documents (application form, CV/Resume and any other relevant document) to Deputy Registrar, PG Section, IIT Delhi, Hauz Khas, New Delhi-16. The department will review your application and if successful, call you for an interview.
If selected through the rolling admission process, a candidate is expected to join within a month of the offer of admission. However under special cases (like serving a notice period in their organization, or any other justified reason), a request to join later can be initiated with the academic section. While a candidate can join the department in the middle of a semester through process, he/she can register for courses only whenever the subsequent semester starts.
